Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is food provided?

Yes, breakfast will consist of muffins, bagels, pastries, and donuts. Coffee, juice, tea, and water will also be served. Lunch will be provided by Trillium Catering Services.

  • What should my daughter/student bring to the conference?

A pair of comfortable walking shoes and a coat will be sufficient for most participants. Most workshops are indoors, but there may be some time spent outdoors waiting for the bus or walking to a workshop location. Please be prepared for the weather. Workshops which will have outdoor activities are noted in the brochure and the on-line workshop listings.

  • Are refunds possible?

Unfortunately, there are no refunds possible.

  • What happens if I cannot make the conference after applying?

If you find out that your daughter/student can no longer make the conference after applying, please contact the CCMR Outreach Office (email and phone number below) and let them know that your daughter/student can no longer attend. The registration fee cannot be refunded.

  • What if I cannot afford the registration fee?

EYH offers scholarships to girls who cannot pay the fee. Please call or email the CCMR Outreach Office at the number below for more information.

  • To whom do I make my check out to?

    Cornell University

  • When does my daughter/student get her T-shirt?

All student participants receive their free T-shirts at the end of the conference. Adults are welcome to purchase a T-shirt of their own for $7.

  • What if no one can accompany my daughter/student to the conference or if I want to attend the panel discussion?

We will provide a Cornell Buddy for the day. A Cornell Buddy is an undergraduate or graduate Cornell student who has volunteered to take the participants to their workshops. Please indicate on the application if the participant will need a Buddy for the day.

  • Why can't my daughter have a Cornell Buddy if I also attend?

We have found that the maximum number of Buddies we can recruit to volunteer an entire day to EYH is about 90. It is just not possible for us to find a Buddy for all 200 girls who attend EYH each year. We ask that these Buddies be reserved for girls who would otherwise have to find their way around the Cornell Campus alone.

  • Since EYH at Cornell is so popular why don't you run it twice so more girls can have this great opportunity?

EYH at Cornell is entirely run by graduate student volunteers (with the help of the CCMR outreach office). It is an enormous undertaking to organize this one day conference. It takes more than 9 months of planning by a team of ~20 volunteers and it must be done in addition to the challenging work of our graduate studies. At the moment we feel that running it twice would just stretch us too far, and we would rather run one great EYH conference than two mediocre ones.

  • How are the workshops for my daughter assigned?

Efforts are made to try to accommodate your daughter's/student's workshop preferences, and most participants get their top choices. But please realize that we have to accommodate about 200 girls, so your daughter/student may be placed in a workshop that she may not have signed up for. And, she may discover a previously unknown interest in one of these workshops!

  • Can I request that my daughter/student be assigned to the same workshops as her friend?

No, we do not honor requests to match girls with their friends. This conference is a great opportunity for the participants to meet girls from other schools and make new friends. Your daughter/student will be able to catch up with her friends during lunch or at the keynote address.

  • What if my daughter/student cannot attend the entire conference?

Your daughter/student may attend as much as the conference as possible. We will still require the $10 registration fee to be paid in full. Please indicate on your application form which workshop sessions your daughter/student will be attending.

  • When will my daughter/student know which workshops she will be attending?

She will find out on the day of the conference. If she enrolled in an outdoor workshop or one that requires her to bring anything, a mailing will be included in the confirmation packet that is sent out mid-April.

  • Will there be transportation between the various workshop locations?

Yes, buses are chartered for the day to transport participants and their chaperones to the various workshops around campus. For workshops that are farther off campus, rented vans will transport workshop participants and their chaperones to the location.

  • Will the outdoor workshops be cancelled if the weather is poor?

No, the workshops occur rain or shine so please wear the appropriate clothing. If your daughter/student is participating in an outdoor workshop, you will receive a list of things to bring to the conference included with the confirmation letter.

  • Will I be able to participate in my daughter's/student's workshops?

No. We encourage parents/teachers to observe the workshops, but due to budget and supply constraints we ask that adults not participate in the workshops.

  • What grades are invited to participate in EYH?

This year EYH is open to girls in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade.

  • Are there other EYH Conferences which might be closer to where I live?

EYH is a national program. To find other EYH conference visit the National EYH website. In NY state the longest running conferences are this one (held at Cornell in Ithaca, NY) and the New York City/Westchester County Conference. There are also conferences at SUNY Buffalo and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
