Expanding Your Horizons:
Inspiring Girls in Math, Science, and Engineering
Saturday April 24, 2010
What is Expanding Your Horizons?
Cornell University's EYH is an annual, one-day conference for over 250 girls in grades 7 through 9.
Girls, parents, and teachers come from
across New York State and beyond to attend.
The
day begins with a
keynote speech by a prominent female scientist.
Girls each participate three in hands-on
workshops organized by Cornell students, faculty, and staff.
Participants also have the opportunity to be accompanied to their workshops with a "buddy" who is a female math, science, or engineering student. The buddy program affords girls direct interaction with female role models.
Throughout the day, a variety of scientific books, resources, and games are available to participants. At lunchtime, participants may attend a hands-on physics demonstration session and bug zoo.
Parents can accompany their daughters to workshops and also attend the
Adult Panel at which they can discuss with prominent female scientists opportunities to foster their daughters' interest in math, science, and engineering.
Over 250 volunteers help with all aspects of the conference.
EYH
organizational committees are all chaired by graduate students in science
In
2008,
Cornell EYH expanded our program size by 50 girls and increased our recruitment of minority and rural students.
We also began taking EYH workshops to Lansing Residential where 40 more girls are able to participate.
Cornell EYH remains committed to offering EYH to girls in grades 7 to 9 in all school districts on a first-come first-serve basis.
Girls, parents, and volunteers have enthusiastic
responses to EYH at Cornell.
Program Goals:
To increase young women's interest in math and science by providing hands-on learning experiences.
To provide young women with the opportunity to meet and interact with female role models in careers relating to math, science, and engineering.
To encourage young women to study math and science by showing them the benefits of education and its relevance to their lives.
To provide parents tools to foster their daughters' interest in math and science.
The Expanding Your Horizons conference would not be possible without
the generous support we receive from our donors.
