Keynote Speaker
Every year the EYH organizers invite a prominent female scientist or engineer to share her experiences and interest in science/engineering with the participants of the EYH Conference. This Keynote Address kicks off the conference, bringing all the participants and their accompanying adults and buddies together before they head off to a full day of workshops. The keynote address is open to the entire Cornell community. If you have any suggestions for keynote speakers, please email Robin Smith (rls78). The 2010 conference keynote speaker will be Dr. Persis S. Drell, the director of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. She received her PhD in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983, and was a professor here at Cornell University from 1988 to 2002. Known for her research in particle astrophysics, which studies the subatomic particles that make up our universe, she was also head of Cornell's CLEO collaboration and chair of the physics department. Click here for her faculty webpage at SLAC. The 2009 conference keynote speaker was Dr. Karen Harpp, an associate professor of geology at Colgate University. She obtained her PhD in geology and chemistry from Cornell University in 1995. Using chemistry to understand how volcanoes work, Karen is especially interested in ocean island volcanoes like the Galapagos and Iceland. She enjoys working in exotic places including Antarctica and the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Karen loves dogs, teaching, and taking her students hiking on volcanoes! Other Past EYH Keynote Speakers:
