Research Experience for Teachers I 2006

2009 | 2008 | 2007 | 2006 | 2005 | 2004 | 2003 | 2002 | 2001 | 2000 | 1999

The 2006 Team-RET participants were (from left to right):

  • Jordan Pekor - Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, NY
  • Myriam Ibarra - Nottingham High School, Syracuse, NY
  • Walter Peck - Whitney Point High School, Whitney Point, NY
  • Joan Erickson - SUNY Delhi, Delhi, NY
  • Thomas Nabinger - Nottingham High School, Syracuse, NY
  • Frank LaGatta - Shaker High School, Latham, NY

While most of the their time was spent in the CCMR shared experimental facilities with the facility managers (such as shown here with Hudson Mesoscale Processing Facility Manager, Dr. Yuanming Zhang) the teachers were also given the opportunity to attend research talks, meet with faculty members and graduate students, tour other research facilities at Cornell and enjoy the scenic and geologic beauty of Ithaca's gorges.

The 2006 Team-RET program ran from July 5 - August 11 and included the following activities:

  • "Introduction to Materials Science" (Prof. Kit Umbach)
  • Hudson Mesoscale Processing Facility
  • Production and Characterization of Nano-Fibers (Prof. Yong Joo)
  • Evolution of Waterfalls and Gorges (Prof. Alex Moore)
  • Tour of Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source and CLEO
  • Electron and Optical Microscopy Facility
  • X-Ray Diffraction Facility
  • Diffraction Classroom Activity
  • Safety Training
  • Materials Facility
  • Glassblowing
  • Polymer Characterization Facility
  • Tour of Physical Sciences Library
  • UHV-STEM Laboratory
  • Computing and PowerPoint Training

Optional talks included:

  • "Giving Cells What They Want: Biomaterials for Skeletal Tissue Engineering" (Prof. Lawrence Bonassar)
  • "Biomineralization and Bio-Inspired Materials Synthesis" (Prof. Lara Estroff)
  • "The Science of Squishy Matter" (Prof. Itai Cohen)

Research Experience for Teachers II 2006

Independent-RET: July 5- August 25, 2006

2006 saw three Team-RET alumni return to work with faculty members on research projects in the Independent-RET program.

Ulugbek Akhmedov teaches Physics, Chemistry and Math at Stuyvesant High School in New York City, NY. Ulugbek (right) worked with Materials Science & Engineering Professor Rüdiger Dieckmann (left) and graduate student Krishna Etika during the summer. His research focused on the synthesis of Cobalt Orthosilicate crystals. Ulugbek originally participated in the Team-RET program in 2005.

Eric Bowerman teaches Chemistry at Vestal Senior High School in Vestal, NY. Eric worked with Materials Science & Engineering Professor George Malliaras and graduate students Justin Slinker and Daniel Bernards during the summer. His research focused on how OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) can be processed in an environmentally safe way. Eric originally participated in the Team-RET program in 2004.

Sydney Mendez teaches Chemistry, Engineering Design and General Science at Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY. Sydney (left) worked with Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Professor Yong Joo (right) and graduate student Jeanne Panels during the summer. His research focused on retrieving and recycling cellulose from waste materials. Sydney originally participated in the Team-RET program in 2005.

At the end of the RET program, teachers are expected to develop a materials science related lesson plan. These lesson plans, which we refer to as modules, have been as varied as the teacher that have participated and have ranged in topic from geology to biodegradable polymers to balsa wood bridges. The full list of RET developed modules can be found on our RET Modules page.
