Ceramics and Glasses

Ceramics are inorganic nonmetallic solids. Ceramics are defined to have a crystalline structure whereas glasses are inorganic nonmetallic solid with no crystalline structure. Ceramics are strong at high temperatures and are used mainly as insulators but like glass they are brittle. The Space Shutte above is covered with ceramic tiles to protect it from burning up upon its return to the atmosphere. Glass is used for optical fibers, liquid crystal displays and windows.
