Materials Science and Engineering

This web page was created to help students in high school and also those starting college become familiar with Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). MSE is an exciting field where you can research, design and create new materials and combine existing materials for the improvement of our daily life.

What is so special about a career in Materials Science?

Materials Science and Engineering is special and unique because it is interdisciplinary. It is a field that truly combines many Science and math subjects. Also, it's a field where you can turn your ideas into real life applications, for example in the field of computers, medicine, or every day products. If you love Science, get excited about finding answers to real problems, and want to be part of improving the future of your world by creating new or better and safer products then Materials Science and Engineering is for you!

How do I become a Materials Scientist?

Take as many Science and math courses as you can in high school and in college. A good knowledge of Physics and Chemistry is very important. Never hesitate to ask "why" to questions you might have in class. There are undergraduate and graduate programs in Materials Science where you can begin to do meaningful research. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of this field, many Materials scientists work and collaborate with other scientists, and that is one of the most fun aspects of this field.
