Educational Programs for Teachers
Overview
To raise the quality of K-12 science education, the CCMR Educational Programs Office (EPO) has developed and currently offers several programs that directly address the professional interests of teachers. All CCMR programs are free of charge and often provide teachers with materials to enable them to implement the experiments in their classrooms.
Workshops
The following programs are offered regularly: Research Experience for Teachers (RET) I & II for middle school and high school math, science and technology teachers is offered each summer; the Materials Science Workshop for high school and community college physics and chemistry teachers is offered every fall; the CCMR Institute for Chemistry Teachers (CICT) is offered every summer for high school chemisty teachers; and the MicroWorld Festival for elementary school teachers is offered annually with multiple sessions.
Professional Development
We are continuing to work with teachers in local school districts to provide professional development teacher training for elementary and high school teachers. The New York State Education Department now requires all districts "to provide substantial professional development to all their teachers." Faculty and graduate students are currently working on addressing the fourth grade standardized science test and high school physics Regent's requirements.
