The biomimetic formation of CaCO3 was investigated in the presence of a novel organic template solution, maleic chitosan solution. A family of superstructured calcite mesocrystals with uniform shape and size were formed. The uniquely spherical mesocrystals were assembled from multi-layers of primary flake-like structures through aggregation-mediated crystallization.
