SEM image of the plate-like octacalcium phosphate [Ca8H2(PO4)6-5H2O] crystals grown under an agarose hydrogel and self-assembled monolayer (SAM, 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid) as a model ogranic matrix. Octacalcium phosphate is of biological importance and used as a precursor upon hydrolysis to create hydroxyapatite - the mineral component of bone and teeth.
