SEM images of calcite single crystals grown in hydrogel, (a) as prepared; (b,c) after etching. As shown in (c), the etched crystal has an interpenetrating-network structure, which demonstrate the gel-grown calcite single crystal shown in (a) is in fact an interpenetrating-network composite of a single crystal and an organic matrix.
