AFM image showing dendritic island structures (one bi-layer, ~0.3 nm, in height) and triangular disordered domains on the bottom of a step-free crater obtained after UHV high temperature anneal. Both types of structures appear after (1x1) –> (7x7) surface transition. The triangular features appear as disordered “clouds” of atoms at the boundaries of triangular, ordered 7x7 surface domains.
