The cytoplasm of mouse oocyte at germinal vesicle stage. The TEM image shows cytoplasmic lattices (CPLs), a highly abundant filamentous lattices-like structure in mouse oocyte. The characteristic CPLs associated with electron-dense particles 20-30 nm in diameter conserve among mammals including humans and are unique to mammalian female germ cells and early embryos, indicating they may play a specific role to early development in mammals.
