A carbon nanotube (in black) with gold clusters (in yellow) in 3D was reconstructed by taking a series of projected STEM-ADF images at tilt angles ranging ± 70 degrees. The side walls of the nanotube appear darker since they contain more mass. E-beam evaporated gold clusters on the nanotube and facets as shown in the inset. 3D electron imaging of the nanotube with gold clusters makes it possible to study the three-dimensional nanotube-gold contact geometry which affects the contact resistance.
