Here you see a beautiful example of ordering on different length scales. SU-8 cylinders are placed on a silicon wafer in a hexagonal fashion using photolithographic techniques, giving order on the micron scale. An opal, composed of polystyrene beads, is grown in the space between the cylinders, giving structure on the ~100 nm length scale. This assembly will be used as a template to make hierarchical ordered non-oxide ceramics, where cooperative assembly of a ceramic material and a block copolymer will structure the material on the ~10 nm length scale.
