Dark-field image of a CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dot. The black region in the center of the dot shows the location of the higher-Z CdSe core, and the red region around it indicates the location of the lower-Z ZnS capping layer. EELS data confirms that the core is located in the black region and that the shell material is asymmetrically distributed around it.
