Equine macrophages are stimulated to simulate an inflammatory response in vitro by a micro-patterned monolayer of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Patterned line of LPS shown as a lighter stripe over the silicon background. Cells have been fixed, critical point dried, and coated with gold-palladium. The goal of the study is to mimic the immune response as it would happen in vivo on a silicon chip, and with electron microscopy monitor the morphological changes undergone by the macrophages as it is stimulated.
