The image is of an aggregate of aragonite crystals (a polymorph of calcium carbonate). The crystal was solution grown on a carboxyl terminated self assembled monolayer on gold. Aragonite forms naturally in mollusk shells. Aragonite crystals are orthorhombic, needlelike crystals which often grow in this branching form that looks flower-like.
