AFM image showing the ultrastructure and hexagonal symmetry of a 2-D surface layer (‘S-layer’) protein crystal isolated from the acidothermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. The image reveals the protein’s highly repetitive surface structure and enables quantitative measurement of the lattice dimensional parameters (lattice constant = 22 nm).
