Keck SEM (LEO)
High resolution SEM image showing the ultrastructure and hexagonal symmetry of a 2-D surface layer (‘S-layer’) protein crystal isolated from the Gram-positive bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans. Optimization of a novel metal shadowing technique enables the visualization of the protein’s highly repetitive surface structure and nanometric lattice spacing (18 nm).
