Two polymorphs of calcium carbonate were grown on the edge of a fractured single crystal of silicon. The rhombohedra structure is single crystal calcite, while the flowerlike polycrystalline structure is aragonite. Crystals were grown under an aqueous solution of calcium chloride with the infusion of ammonium carbonate vapor.
