A cross-section of a cylindrical block copolymer film reveals mixed orientations. Cylinders align perpendicular to the plane of the film near the top surface (denoted by a sputtered gold layer) and align parallel to the plane of the film in the bulk. Uranyl acetate staining is used to obtain contrast between the block domains.
