Synthesis of Covalent Organic Frameworks

Professor: Song Lin

Project Description
:  Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a family
of newly emerging organic materials bearing structural resemblance to metal-organic frameworks. Highly symmetrical organic building blocks
are stitched together using strong, dynamic covalent bonds in a predetermined topology to construct COFs. These materials are semicrystalline and bear many interesting properties, such as high surface area and high charge-carrier mobility (conductivity). As a result, COFs have been shown highly promising for a wide range of
applications in areas ranging from catalysis to gas separation to electronic materials.

Our research aims to identify new organic building blocks to synthesize COFs with unprecedented structures and potentially important properties. Particularly, we are interested in preparing monolayer COF materials whose structure resembles that of graphene but are highly modular and contain functional groups. These materials could be used as high surface area solid phase electrocatalysts as well as in electronic device fabrication.
