Ultra-Fast Magneto-Thermal Microscopy to Probe Electron Spin Dynamics in Materials with Sub-Micron Resolution

Professor: Gregory Fuchs

Greg FuchsProject Description
: We have recently developed a time-resolved magnetic microscope with sub-micron spatial resolution based on magneto-thermal interactions in materials to study the physics of spin transport, driven either by spin-orbit interactions or by direct thermal generation. In particular, we focus on the time-dynamics of spin-current generation in ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and multiferroic insulating material heterostructures to reveal new insights into picosecond scale spin transport without corresponding charge transport. In this project, the REU student will interact with faculty, postdocs, and graduate student as they gain experience with finite-element modeling, computer-controlled instrumentation, and gigahertz-frequency electrical measurement techniques.
