Physics 654 "Basic Training in Condensed Matter" (Spring 2008)

Location Rock 230

This course consists of four modules by Veit Elser, Erich Mueller, Piet Brouwer, and Chris Henley. See the main web site.

Module 3 (or 4), "Quantum antiferromagnets"

dates: March 26-Apr 11

Christopher L. Henley, 531 Clark, clh@ccmr.cornell.edu

Office hours: tent. MTu 3-4 PM; also try Weds 5:30-6:15 PM (but P208 has priority)

Prerequisites

This module is "advanced"; it's assumed you know basic solid state (as in P635) and Stat Mech (P562), or the equivalent. Optimally, you should also have Advanced Stat Phys (P653), for the renormalization group, and Solid State II (P635) or concurrently. My lectures won't depend on those for any particular results, but a certain sophistication is assumed. When I introduce concepts out of those courses, I won't linger, as I should if you were seeing this for the first time.

Course content

Text

The main text will be Interacting electrons and Quantum Magnetism by Assa Auerbach (Springer, 1994). Other useful sources (e.g. review papers) will be listed here, or on handouts, during the module.
