World Congress on Ultrasound/Ultrasonics International, WCU/UI'05

Beijing, China; August 28 - September 1, 2005

Information for authors

The Proceedings of the Conference are scheduled to appear in March/April 2006 in the journal Ultrasonics. A copy of the volume will be sent to all full registrants at *WCU/UI'05*.

Publications policy

  1. Authors of papers presented at the Conference are invited to submit a manuscript for consideration for inclusion in the Proceedings.
  2. Manuscript must not have been previously submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere or copyrighted. Copyright must be transferred in writing to Elsevier Science B.V. after acceptance for publication.
  3. All papers will be refereed after the Conference and must meet normal technical standards in addition to some length and style requirements. Editorial decisions for the Proceedings are made by the Editors of Ultrasonics for this special volume.
  4. Only material actually presented at the Conference by an author or an appointed delegate will be considered for publication.
  5. There are no publication or page charges. Twenty five free offprints of papers in the Proceedings will be sent to the corresponding author.
  6. Papers that might cause publication delays because of failed deadlines or other requirements will not appear in the Proceedings but may be published in a later issue of Ultrasonics, upon the discretion of the Editors.

Instructions for submitting papers and electronic source files

The aim is to produce the Proceedings using the electronic source files which should be supplied by authors for each paper; manuscripts for which an electronic file is not available will be typeset. The format will be identical to that of the UI'03 Proceedings (Ultrasonics Vol. 42, Nos. 1-9). Detailed instructions for preparing the manuscript are given on the second side of this sheet. There are three main stages in the publication process:

  1. The author should submit the manuscript during the Conference (ultimately 2 September 2005), in order to be considered for inclusion in the Proceedings. Four copies of the manuscript should be supplied: one master set with the original figures and three copies. The manuscripts will be distributed among the Proceedings Editors according to session subject.
  2. All manuscripts will be refereed and authors notified of the results as soon as possible. The author is requested to resubmit the revised manuscript to the appropriate Editor as soon as possible, but before 1 December 2005. A disk with the revised source file should be sent with the hardcopy. It is the objective of the Editors that the refereeing process be completed shortly after that date. Authors are requested to assist in attaining this objective. Note: The Editors and the Publisher must of necessity assume that the material submitted for publication is properly available to the public. It is the responsibility of the author to determine whether disclosure of the material requires the prior consent of other parties.
  3. Within six months after the Conference, the corresponding author will receive page proofs for proof reading from the Publisher. These must be returned promptly; otherwise the paper will be published without the author's corrections.

Summary – Deadlines

  1. Submission of manuscripts before 2 September 2005: four copies of the manuscript, the original figures, a disk with the source file.
  2. If revisions are required, the revised manuscript must be resubmitted to the appropriate Editor by 1 December 2005.

Preparing a manuscript for the *WCU/UI'05* Proceedings

The manuscript should be written in English and neatly typed or printed on one side of the paper using double line spacing. Do not try to emulate any final printed layout, as the volume will not be reproduced from camera-ready copy. Unclear or handwritten insertions are not acceptable. To keep the printed volume within a reasonable size, authors are requested to limit the length of their paper to 4 printed pages for contributed papers ( about 10 typical manuscript pages), 6 printed pages (14 manuscript pages) for Invited papers and 8 printed pages (19 manuscript pages) for Plenary papers. The following guidelines should be carefully obeyed.

Number all pages, from the very first to the very last. The first page should contain the following items, in exactly the given order:

  1. Suggested session, selected according to the list of Conference sessions.
  2. Version number and date, stating when that particular version was finalized (to avoid mix-up).
  3. Title of the paper. Do not use capital letters.
  4. Authors (initials or first names before surnames), separated by commas and each followed by a superscript letter ( a etc.), referring to the respective address.
  5. Addresses, each preceded by a superscript letter ( a etc.), referring to the respective author name(s).
  6. Abstract, which should be self-contained (no footnotes or references).
  7. Keywords, which will be quoted in the Subject Index of the Proceedings.
  8. Contact author name and complete postal address plus valid fax number and email address for the period until end of 2003.

The next pages should contain the following items (in exactly this order):

  1. Main text, which should preferably be concise, in view of the length limitations. Do not use footnotes; incorporate these as text remarks. Never should references be used as footnotes. Acknowledgements (e.g. for grants) should be put at the end of the main text, before the references. Notation must be clear, compact and consistent. Special attention should be given to characters that can be misread, such as: l (ell), 1 (one), ' (prime), o (lower case), O (capital), 0 (zero), º (degree), v (vee), ν (Greek nu), c (lower case), C (capital), i, I, s, S, x, X, ´ (times), z, Z, p, P, ρ (Greek rho), k, K, κ (Greek kappa), etc. Formulas should be displayed (i.e. put on separate lines) when important, but also if they are likely to be broken incorrectly in the printed text. Displayed equations should still fit into the Journal text column width (i.e. 7.5 cm), so you should break long lines at suitable places, with this width in mind. Equation numbers should be put at the right margin. To permit a page break, they should not refer to a group of equations; rather subdivide your numbering [e.g. (2a), (2b)].
  2. References, which should be limited to the most relevant literature. Do not use the references for footnotes. The information should be presented in the correct Ultrasonics style (see recent issues), especially with regard to the order of items: authors (initials before names), journal abbreviation (or Editors, book/proceedings title, and publisher plus city), volume, year of publication, first page. All references should be cited in the text, numbered in [ ] brackets consecutively in order of first appearance. All references should be cited in the text.
  3. Tables (with arabic numbering in order of appearance), which should have a clear structure, with simple column headings giving all units.
  4. Figure captions, listed together on a separate page and not put on the figure sheets.
  5. Figures, supplied as one original set (or glossy prints) plus three copies, or as good laserprints. They must be absolutely crisp and stainless. A 'landscape' layout (or juxtaposed 'portraits') is suggested for each figure, measuring approximately half a page and designed for reduction to a text column (8.3 cm wide). All details (lettering, plotted symbols) should have proportionate dimensions so as not to become illegible or unclear after reduction (at least 1.5 mm high in print); avoid small open symbols which tend to fill in upon reduction. Check lettering carefully for spelling mistakes and consistency with the main text. Wherever feasible, combine analogous graphs into a single figure. All figures should be identified in the top margin by their number, the name of the first author and the reference number of the conference (if known). The numbering should be in the order in which they are first referred to in the text.

Electronic manuscripts should be included with the final paper version; if the source file is not available, this should be explicitly mentioned. It is the responsibility of the author to ensure that the version on disk exactly matches that on paper. Any of the well-known word processors may be used. The preferred storage medium is a standard 3½ inch disk, in MS-DOS/Windows format (other systems are also welcome). The tables (if applicable) and the list of figure captions should be supplied with the main text (but not embedded in the text). It is not necessary to submit electronic figures. The name and version of the word processing program and the type of operating system should be clearly indicated on the disk label, plus the name of the first author. If the manuscript contains any parts (e.g. complex formulas or tables) or last minute corrections that are not included on the disk, these should be clearly identified on the paper copy.
