Microprobe, Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS)

The JEOL microprobe has been decommissioned. For analytical microprobe work please contact the Syracuse University user facility for accurate WDS (wavelength dispersive spectroscopy) work, especially with regards to analysis of light elements. The Syracuse system has an oxygen nozzle for cleaning surface contamination which can be helpful for quantitative carbon and nitrogen analyses. The Cameca system also has cathodoluminensence capability.
At Cornell we can still provide small probe qualitative light element analysis and quantitative and qualitative analyses of heavier elements using EDS on the Mira and Zeiss SEMs, as well as by XPS, down to approximately 0.05 atomic%.
