Project Description: We have developed a time-resolved magnetic microscope with sub-micron spatial resolution based on magneto-thermal interactions in materials to study the physics of spin transport, driven either by spin-orbit interactions or by direct thermal generation. Recently, we also extend this capability to variable temperature with a microscopy cryostat. In this project, the REU student will interact with faculty, postdocs, and graduate students to understand temperature dependent magneto-thermal microscopy as they gain experience with finite-element modeling, computer-controlled instrumentation, and gigahertz-frequency electrical measurement techniques.
